Status is an app great for that kind of need.
You don't need to always open the app manually to update your status, but instead the app itself will update your status for you.

Currently, the list of statuses available are:

The developer said that using Status won't affect your battery life, meaning to say that the app doesn't need to be always on every time.

Current version 1.2.1 requires Android 4.1 (JellyBean) and up.
